Over 1 million of our countrymen work permanently in Germany. Due to the epidemiological situation in Europe, most people had to give up coming home for holidays or even on weekends. But as the proverb says – man does not live by work alone, everyone deserves a rest. Therefore, we recommend checking the days off and public holidays in Germany in 2022.

Work and days off in Germany

As a rule, working on public holidays is prohibited in Germany. Specific professions (e.g. fire brigade, emergency services or uniformed workers) are the exception. All non-working days are stipulated in the State Holidays Act. Only National Unity Day is determined by federal law.

On New Year’s Eve (31.12) and Christmas Eve (24.12) there is no ban on work, although theoretically an employee may take additional time off for these 2 days.

Important! If a public holiday in Germany falls on a working day, the employee receives 100% of the remuneration for that day. However, if the holiday falls on a weekend, the employer does not settle this day. If the employee works on public holidays, he or she receives an additional 100% of the salary bonus.
