After a ongoing refugee crisis began in Europe in late February 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the “homes for Ukraine” programme has allowed individuals, charities, community groups and businesses across the UK to offer a room or home rent-free to Ukrainians escaping the war, regardless of whether they have ties to the country.
Accomodation for Ukranians in the UK
I’m pleased that the UK is supporting Ukraine in every single way that they can, whether that’s military aid, humanitarian aid or indeed providing sanctuary for those that are fleeing Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians arrive in the UK, and they are getting all the support that they need. UK homes/accomodations for Ukrainian refugees: (scheme programme) how the scheme works.
People in the UK can offer to sponsor and house people fleeing the conflict in Ukraine who have obtained a visa through a new government scheme.
So far, around 4,000 visas have been issued to Ukrainians with “tens of thousands” more expected to be provided.
What is the scheme?
Scheme is a home for Ukraine” programme that allows individuals, charities, community groups and businesses across the UK to offer a room or home rent-free to Ukrainians escaping the war, regardless of whether they have ties to the country.
How many Ukrainians are expected to be helped under the sponsorship scheme route?
There will be no limit or cap on the sponsorship route. The UK will welcome as many Ukrainians as wish to come and for whom there are sponsors. This is a huge humanitarian crisis, and we are urging the British public to come forward and help where they can.
Which Ukrainians are eligible to come on this scheme?
The scheme is open to Ukrainian nationals who were residents in Ukraine prior to 1st January 2022. It is also open to their immediate family members and family members of such Ukrainian nationals: a spouse, a civil partner, an unmarried partner (must have lived together in a relationship for two years)
How is the scheme going to be delivered?
To make this scheme a success we need a national effort with communities, charities, faith groups, businesses, councils and devolved governments all working together to provide much needed support to those arriving in the weeks and months ahead.
We are asking people in the UK to offer accommodation for at least 6 months – we know this is a significant ask.
Alongside the generous offer of accommodation sponsors will be making, UK are providing a substantial level of funding to local authorities to enable them to provide much wider support to families to rebuild their lives and fully integrate into our communities. Under this scheme, people will have access to public services, work and benefits.
We also have some hotels like for instance, hotel in Cheltenham which offers to take in Ukrainian refugees for free It’s a luxury hotel in Gloucestershire that is hosting refugees escaping the conflict in Ukraine for free.
’We look forward to taking in many more refugees’
A company spokesperson said: „We are proud to offer this programme in our hotels across the UK. The hotel has already welcomed several families from Ukraine and look forward to taking in many more refugees over the coming weeks. The hotels are providing accommodation, food, and essential items to families.
UK visa support for Ukrainians
How can Ukrainians get UK visas?
Two new UK visa schemes have been announced for Ukrainians escaping the war – but only 5% of applications have been approved so far.
The Ukraine Family Scheme enables those fleeing the conflict to join relatives already living in Britain.
A second visa, which is not yet in operation, promises to allow people and organisations to sponsor Ukrainians and match them with a family – irrespective of whether they have links to the UK or not.
Ukrainians already in the UK with a visa will be able to extend their stay by extending their visa or switching to another immigration route, where eligible, even if their visa does not normally allow them to do so.
The scheme also applies to immediate family members or those extended family members.
Relationships must have started before 1st January 2022 for spouses, partners, and fiances or extended family members to be eligible.
