At the outset, it is worth noting that Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, but belongs to the Schengen area. Due to this, travellers from other countries in this area can cross the border on one of the following documents:

  • an ID card
  • a passport
  • a temporary passport

Attention! If you are going to Switzerland as a tourist for a period not exceeding 90 days, you do not need a visa or other additional documents.

In order to be able to stay legally in Switzerland for more than 90 days, you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • to sign an employment contract for a definite or indefinite period with a company operating in Switzerland;
  • be delegated to work in Switzerland by an employer/company from an EU/EFTA country;
  • to run your own business in an EU/EFTA country and operate in Switzerland on the basis of a self-employment contract.

Apart from that, you must complete the registration obligation, i.e. to find an apartment in Switzerland and report your stay at the nearest registration office or municipality office.
