Work and Public Holidays in Germany

In Germany, working on public holidays is prohibited. Exceptions are made for certain professions (e.g., firefighters, medical staff). The public holidays are defined by state laws in each federal land. Only the Day of German Unity is determined by federal law.

Public holidays and days off in Belgium 2025

Important! If a public holiday in Germany falls on a working day, the employee receives their full salary for that day. However, if the holiday falls on a weekend, the employer does not compensate for that day. If the employee works on a holiday, they receive an additional 100% bonus.
