What types of mobile phone companies exist in Spain?
In Spain, there are two types of mobile phone companies, varied depending on the coverage network offered.
- Operators with their own network: they possess their own coverage network (technically known as OMR).
- Virtual mobile operators: they use another company’s network to offer coverage to their customers (known as MVNOs).
The only operators that possess their own network are Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and MásMóvil. In connection with this, any other operator will be considered as MVNO. Even the better known ones like Jazztel or Amena, which are big companies in Spain, are considered as MVNOs because they don’t have their own network.
What benefits do MVNO networks offer?
Undoubtedly, the attractive price is the main advantage of MVNOs in Spain. As MVNO networks became a strong competition on the market, traditional operators had to rethink their business model. MVNOs do not have to maintain the entire infrastructure at the national level, that’s why their maintenance is cheaper. Customers also benefit from this by paying less than with a traditional operator.
Another advantage, which is also related to lower prices, is that MVNO’s offers are tailored to the client’s needs. Traditional operators focus more on the sale of complete packages (television, internet, mobile and landline). In contrast, MVNOs usually offer services separately, so you only pay for what you intend to use.
However, it would not be fair for not mentioning the disadvantages of MVNO networks. For example, having a “borrowed” network from large operators, the connection and coverage are usually a bit weaker. If you think about it, it makes sense that bigger operators don’t lend their maximum capacity to the companies that compete with them.

- Movistar is one of the best telephone companies. It offers packages combining landline telephony, mobile, ADSL / optical-fiber and television. It offers a stable connection and professional customer service.
- Vodafone offers optical-fiber, mobile, landline and TV services. It also offers an ADSL connection. It is a pioneer in offering its customers 5G services, including free roaming at Vodafone rates.
- Orange is a mobile company offering optical-fiber or ADSL connections and television. Cell lines are quite efficient. Orange is distinguished by the Más Megas de Orange prepaid service. Prices are the most competitive among mobile operators possessing their own network.
