The Netherlands is one of the most secularized countries in Europe. According to the latest figures, more than half of the inhabitants of the Netherlands do not belong to any religious group. But the largest group of believers are Catholics (approx. 26%), therefore, a large part of the holidays that are celebrated in most European countries, are also celebrated in the Netherlands. However, most often these will not be non-working days.

Important! Labor Day (1.05) is not celebrated in the Netherlands.

King’s Day and Liberation Day – the most important public holidays in the Netherlands

King’s Day – a public holiday that is celebrated on the birthday of King of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander (27.04.2023). It is a statutory non-working day. Usually on this day, various festivals and concerts are organized. During the celebration of this day, residents should put on their best orange-colored outfits, as it is the color of the ruling family in the Netherlands.

Liberation Day is celebrated on 5.05, it commemorates the end of the Nazi occupation. Interestingly, on this day employees of the state administration have a day off, and the rest – only every 5 years.
